Twenty one years ago I was successful in being offered a career move and went to live in Fermanagh. Enniskillen to be exact. I had been living in Lisburn and commuting daily to my work in west Belfast. Because the troubles were rife at that time a thirty minute journey to, or from work, could have taken an hour and sometimes more. When I was settled in Enniskillen and had time to take in my surroundings I could not believe the beauty, the peace and tranquility that was, and still is, Fermanagh. I was overwhelmed by the wonderful warmth and friendliness of the people I had come to live and work among. Enniskillen town has a great deal to recommend it to either resident or visitor. It has a long and busy main street with a great variety of shops some of which are still family owned businesses. Curiously enough the name of the street keeps changing as it moves through from one end of the town to the other, from the East Bridge to the West Bridge or visa versa depending on which way you are travelling. Enniskillen is an island town so one is never far away from the beautiful Lower Lough Erne where there is always something of interest going on. Fishing, cruising, water skiing or just watching. I was very good at just watching. I spent twelve very happy years there and eventually, for family reasons, returned to my native Belfast but part of me will always be in beautiful Fermanagh, especially Enniskillen and with the many wonderful friends I made there. |
