Hiring Fairs

Hiring Fair, Londonderry, 1930's

Our first dip into the archives of BBC Radio Foyle.

BBC Radio Foyle in Londonderry first went on air in September 1979 and now is a firm favourite with listeners in the city and surrounding area. (click here to visit the Radio Foyle website)

Presented by Roy Hamilton, the "What's West" programme takes a look at hiring fairs. These fairs, up until 1920's/1930's, were how young men and women found work on farms and how farmers found workers. It was not an easy life - living conditions were hard and wages were small.

You can hear the memories of those who were 'hired out' in "What's West" (Hiring Fairs), which was broadcast on BBC Radio Foyle in April 1980.
