Amelia Earhart's landing near Londonderry A personal account of an historic event. In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman pilot to cross the Atlantic. She took off from Newfoundland, heading for Britain, but landed well off-course in an open field near Londonderry. On climbing out of her plane she asked a man where she was. "In Gallagher`s field", the man replied. "Have you come far?"... "Just from America", she replied. In 1935 Mrs Gallagher spoke to the BBC about that auspicious day. Unfortunately, decades later, the recording is not of the highest quality but it is wonderful to still be able to hear first hand about the day this famous aviatrix made history. Listen to Mrs Gallagher . |
