This unit will support the revised Northern Ireland Curriculum for Geography at KS2. It will expand their awareness of people and places and how people use the earth's natural resources close to home.
By the end of the programme the pupils will have learned about:
T understand and describe the purpose of a canal
locate canals in their local environment
identify the name and length of the canals in Northern Ireland
describe the reasons for the decline in the canal system
discuss the restoration of the canal network in Northern Ireland
describe leisure activities based in and around a canal
describe a threat associated with the canal network in Northern Ireland
In this programme we learn about the heyday of canals and some of the problems that beset them. We also hear how the advent of the railways sounded the death-knell of our canals as viable commercial routes.
