FAI CUP FINAL

Derry City suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak in the FAI Ford Cup final to Eircom League champions, Bohemians. The game had finished 2-2 after extra time.

Sammy Morrow cracked home a blistering free-kick from the edge of the box to give Derry the lead on 60 minutes. That goal was cancelled out only four minutes later with Glen Crowe equalising for Bohs. The Dubliners then went 2-1 ahead in controversial circumstances. Sammy Morrow had been denied what seemed a clear cut penalty in the opening minutes of the game - and was then penalised for an unintentional hand ball inside the box. Jason Byrne converted the penalty. However, Morrow was quick to make amends blasting home an equaliser from inside the box with fifteen minutes remaining. In the shoot-out, both Kevin Deery and Ruairi Higgins had the misfortune of having their spot-kicks saved by Brian Murphy, before Bohs substitute Lithuanian Mindaugas Kalonas fired home the winner.
