Name: Josh Einsle, 29 raised Wheat Ridge Colorado
Home region: Oregon/NW Donegal/Causeway Coast How long you surfing? Let's say a decade
3 sentences that describe you/what you do: Science nerd and surf addict…what more.
Where/Why did you start surfing? Grew up as a snowboarder and always wanted to give it a go. First summer of surfing was in Orange County California while working on a physics internship.
Any surfing honours, comp wins etc? Some times people give me a wave because they like me.
Quiver, plus your fave board? • 9’10” Glide surfboards (Ireland) – really fun board • 9’4” Velzy rounded pin – beat up and possiably one of the best boards ever when the waves are lined up and clean • 7’8” Tuel (Oregon) rounded pin thruster – a short board for us big guys, also great since it rides everything thing from waist to DOH • 6’10” Schuler (Oregon) – another short board for big guys, a little more performance oriented than the Tuel • 6’8” Larry Mable Twinzer (San Diego) – my fish rides great rides about everything..basically if you see me on a short board it is most likely this one As it is summer my favorite board at the moment is the new glide… though the misses’ longboard (not listed) is also high up on the list.
"Surfing is getting more popular in Ireland for sure". Discuss: I do not mind the growth really… besides there will always be spots and waves that you can find to yourself… it will just be a little harder.
Most surf friendly pubs / gigs / eateries: Well the 19th hole has to be pretty friendly to surfers… also have to say I love dropping in to Cannon beach surf when I am home and just hanging out with Mark and listen to him chew the fat over a few brews.
Favorite Surfer/s and why: • CJ Nelson – punk rock longboard style – great nose rides and can boost on a log too boot • Mickey Dora- classic smooth style, out surfed everyone even into his old age. Visionary critic of surf culture as well • Mike Hynson – another person who pushed the boundaries of surfing and board design. Largely overlooked. • Tyler Hatzikian – another great longboarder – surprisingly light footed for someone over 6 feet tall and 15+ stone • Dave Rastavich – great smooth progressive shortboard style- open minded about equipment and the world in genral. Great role model. • The Malloy Brothers – great examples of pure modern day watermen. Enviromentalists, big wave surfers, fans of irish waves… again great role models for how to live life to the fullest. • Gerry Lopez – all time classic style and positive character. (besides he now surfs my home break in Oregon all the time) • The family stone- the whole old crew of surfers that I use to ride with … good friends and good memories… • The crew here – surf stoked heads…again making good memories as we speak.
Best thing about surfing: Days out with friends , morning glass, racing the curl… looking for that hollow spot on the wave…. Also love longboard sessions with the wife just trading waves the whole time
Your top music/reading/movies/tv/radio, surf or otherwise: • Music – Bebop, old Country, bluegrass, punk rock and hip hop • Movies • Surf related – Big Wednesday, another state of mind, sprout, glass love • The rest of life – crouching tiger hidden dragon; seven samurai; the good the bad and the ugly; six string samurai • Radio – the mark patterson show what else? Though I am quite partial to radio 4 and when stateside NPR
Any ambition as a surfer? Still looking to find the tube… I know it will come… just need to find more hollow days. Dream surf trip: right now anywhere that I can trunk it sounds good… but high on the list is a trip to Baja with my father in law.
Anything else to declare? it is always worth the paddle out
