Name/aka: Jim Deeds, 35 Hometown:Belfast born and bred!
Home region: North West
How long you surfing? About three years. I came to surfing late. Always thought it was beyond me, but loved it from the first time I fell off a board.
3 sentences that describe you/what you do: I am a father of three young future surfers (two boys and a girl) and a husband of one Derry lassie. I love music (playing and listening) and the company of good friends. I surf as much as I can, mainly a dash after work when the light is right or a weekend warrior in the winter. Where and why did you start surfing? I started surfing in Donegal after many years of secretly wishing I could give it a go. Got the bug straight away and now I measure my life in terms of the gap between the last surf and the next.
Any surfing honours, comp wins etc? Oh no!
Your fave board: quiver me timbers? Started surfing a Hi Fly 7' 10"- the Titanic as I called it. Now surfing a seven foot Take Off. It's prtty sweet for the 'just out of the beginner stage' surfer like me.
"Surfing is getting more popular in Ireland for sure". Discuss: I don't know how this sits with long time surfers but I am one of the newbies on the surf scene. I think it is more popular and that brings the risk of crowded breaks and fools damaging the environment. But if we all are passionate about surfing and take care of the coastline, it has to be a good thing.
Most surf friendly pubs / gigs / eateries: Don't know this, but I would love some suggestions. Favourite Surfer/s and why: Kelly Slater was the first surfer I knew the name of and I like to watch him still. But at the minute I am loving watching Taj Burrows.
Best thing about surfing: Freedom, the power of the ocean, losing myself for hours, destressing, working out, meeting cool new surfer friends, surfing with old cool surfer friends.... the list goes on.
Your top music/reading/movies/tv/radio, surf or otherwise: Music: loving Keb Mo at the minute.
Movies: Always the Godfather trilogy. TV: Extreme Sports Channel- Drive Thru. Sweet surf movies. Radio: Has to be Gerry Anderson and Mark when I am in the North West. Any ambition as a surfer? To be a surfer when I am sixty.
Dream surf trip: Simple one: a week in Donegal with good friends and red wine.
