Fuerteventura
Posted by Mark : Feb 06

This island - and the Canaries in general - represent for me, the best places to go for a quick surfing week for a number of obvious reasons

Heat.

It's warm down there most of the time. Even in our winter its around 18-22 celsius. The water is much warmer than ours too, meaning you’ll get away with a short wetsuit most of the year

Package Tours.

Some of the package tours direct to the Canaries from Belfast or Dublin are insane value for money. You can get your week including, flights, transfers, rep and hotel for less than £200stg in the off-season. 3 star for maybe £250 sharing.

Accommodation.

It's easy to travel as a larger group and get to stay in the same hotel beside each other. Corralejo is a good spot, and a base for most of the packages to Fuertaventura. It has good value restaurants, some surf shops, local beach and reef breaks. Loads of UK and Irish party people too, but you can escape that scene pretty easily. But the main reason to go down there is the chance to see Los Lobos.

Lobos is a small volcanic island just a few miles off Corralejo. Surfers have known for years that an insane right hander breaks down the entire coast of that volcano. Lobos is in the European top ten for sure, and only for the very best of surfers. I swam out there one day it was about double overhead, decided not to, and just sat there watching the power and the frightening intensity of a truly amazing wave. Boats leave from Corralejo to Lobos harbour for a few Euro, you walk for half an hour to the wave, and there is little on the island except scientists, a half baked café, barren beauty and this huge barrelling wave. But it's well worth the trip.

Back on Fuerta, if I go again, I’d car hire. You really need it if the swell is on the other side of the island from your resort or if you want the options of beach breaks, then points etc.

Surf shops: some
Breaks: all levels.
Gear: summer suit
