TUNNELS UNDER DERRY

A man who’s opened a series of tunnels beneath the streets of Derry’s historic centre has been defending his actions. At the end of 2009, Brian McCarthy opened the first - a cavity under Pump Street. The senior inspector of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Rhonda Robinson, described the tunnels as "19th century drains", but Mr McCarthy insists they are of historical significance. Rhonda Robinson has written to him warning him that she has “serious concerns about the potential for collapse, explosion, or damage to services such as electricy supply” She also told Brian McCarthy that there was also “a potential for serious injury”.
