SQUIRREL WARS

Environmentalists, according to squirrel fan, Malachi O’Doherty, are operating a colour bar. They don’t like the migrant squirrel which came to Ireland in the last century and which thrives here. It is grey. It is vermin, and many approve brutal measures to advance its extermination.... They like red squirrels. Why? Because they’re indigenous.”

In the grey corner, Malachi O'Doherty, in the red corner, Colum Arbuckle and Maeve Rafferty, the Key Species Officer for the Ulster Wildlife Trust (And member of the Northern Ireland Squirrel Forum). Referee: Mark Patterson
