COMING OF AGE

Maureen McGuigan retired reluctantly, aged 65, after 20 years as a dinner lady. Tim Connolly leapt at the chance of taking voluntary retirement. They told their stories after charities representing the interests of older people lost their High Court challenge against compulsory retirement at 65. The argument was whether the Default Retirement Age, introduced by the Government in 2006, complied with a European directive against age discrimination. The judge said the law should stay - for the moment. But he also said an early review in 2010 into the rule meant that there was likely to be a change in the law.
