INDEPENDENT CLOSES The last independent supermarket in Strabane announces it's closing its doors with the loss of dozens of jobs. In an emotional interview, the owner of the business, Gary Mclaughlin, spoke to Sarah Brett about the business, and how he felt to close his doors for the last time.

In a statement, Michael McFadden, manager of Asda Strabane said: “Research has proven that when an Asda opens in or close to a town, the number of people shopping in the area increases significantly, which creates opportunity for everyone. “Since opening in Strabane in 2005 we’ve invested heavily in the local area and have worked closely with the District Council, Job Centres and partner agencies such as the Cresco Trust and Business in the Community to make sure we are supporting the local community as effectively as possible. “We are a major employer – over 500 people now work at our Strabane store, and many of these had been long-term unemployed. This level of job creation has also resulted in more money being reinvested into the local economy. And thanks to the efforts of our colleagues we’ve helped generate funds for so many good causes, local charities and community initiatives. “Asda is also a totally focused on local sourcing. Our dedicated NI buying team has ensured more than 100 local food companies are currently providing 1300 products to Asda’s NI supermarkets, which equates to around 20% of the total food sold here. Last year alone £57million of NI food was sold through our 13 NI stores and this is set to increase to £72million by the end of 2010. “We are committed to Strabane and our customers, and will continue to deliver the products, prices and service which we know they want and appreciate.” |
