Community Voices - Lisa Irvine is a Catholic mother who lives in ArdoyneLisa Irvine

I can't see how anyone would find taking your child to school in any way antagonistic or offensive merely because they're a Catholic child attending a school in a Protestant area. You know, maybe they feel under a siege mentality because Ardoyne is such a large population and it's, you know, Glenbryn is a relatively small population, but I honestly can't see how you would find that offensive in any way. I would defend to the death anybody's right to take their child to school, no matter what religion they are.

I honestly don't see why grown men and women would find it justifiable to come out and hurl abuse, blast bombs, urine-filled balloons at young girls. I honestly don't understand it myself, so I wouldn't expect anybody else on the outside to understand what's going on. I mean, it's 2001, it's the European Year of the Child, which completely appears to have escaped the people of Glenbryn, you know. It's a democratic society apparently, so I honestly wouldn't know how to explain it to anybody other than our presence, you know. We're Catholics and we're walking through a Protestant area and in some way that offends people.

Our children are being blamed for things that are really out of their control. If you had been there on the third of September, we were very naive that day. We were told there was a peaceful protest and that, you know, we'd be escorted to school. If you had seen the raw, naked, sectarian hate on those people's faces that day…I mean, if the security forces weren't there, we were dead. I can tell you that seriously. They were calling our children Fenian scum. I mean, you seen children with spittle running down their faces. These are grown men and women, you know, calling young children and their parents scum and big ears and fatso and you know, I honestly…it is raw, naked, sectarian hate and I honestly can find no explanation for it.
