Mickey Carolan
"The wind caught me and blew me straight up along the field, and right out over the top of the cliff, and over the sea again. My heart's even thumping now thinking about it. "
The Story
Mickey Carolan, arts development officer of the Craic Theatre in Coalisland, had only been flying for a few years when he took his microlight plane to Scotland. Apparently, the rule with small planes like this, is that you go as high up as possible to cross water, so that you can glide down if you get into difficulty. However, a sudden deterioration in the weather made this impossible, forcing him to go lower and lower to get below the cloud cover. Then, the engine cut out.
