Days Like this

Florence Fryer Kelsey

Florence tells us about a special moment in December 1935.

Florence Fryer Kelsey

"I'd taken a rash at home and my mother was about to have her 4th child. I was whisked away to Purdysburn hospital and was put in an isolation ward. I was lying there a month. "

The Story

Florence thought that she would miss Christmas. Everything seemed sad and bleak around her. Lying in a hospital bed she didn't expect her teacher to arrive and make a child's wishes come true.

Florence is what we call in Belfast 'a great talker'. She could keep Days Like This going strong for many years with her anecdotes and memories. Florence is also no stranger to the BBC, having contributed to the BBC People's War project. You can read her account of the Second World War in Belfast by clicking here

Comment: Fantastic to hear. This lady went through a scarry time at a very young age and made it sound lovely as she got sweeties from her teacher!!
Is this story made into a book? if not do you at the BBC have books on this type of subject as my grandfather was sent to this hospital when he was 8 years old in 1925 i think, but not sure why he was there and would love to hear or read anything during that year or anything at all. thank you for your help
