James Jude Keaveney
"I was skidding. I wasn't aware of the boys shouting. I was doing my best to try to control the car"
The Story
After a bad car accident the next thing James knew was that he was lying in a hospital bed in Belfast. "I could see white coats. People were discussing me. This was about 8 hours after my crash. They told me then that my neck was broken, but they didn't tell me that I would be paralysed for the rest of my life."
My View
"That day changed my life almost 100%. My mind was active before that event and it remained active after it. I became hyper-aware of things around me, people in the ward, the TV, the activity in the hospital. It was far from being the end of things for me.
I developed some power in my arms and did exercises to help my movements. I now have a laptop, I read a lot, I've just finished translating a book. There are subjects that I've written about in the past 16 years that I would never have imagined possible. None of this would have been possible had it not been for what happened on that day."
