Mick remembers 1947

Mick McLaughlin

"You couldn't see any hedges, all you could see were trees coming up through the snow."

The Story

This is a story of luck, where a young boy at boarding school is homesick and is determined to go home to the love and warmth of his family. The weather is snowy and cold, and he takes a big risk, but in the end it all works out for the best.

The story continues...

Since leaving school Mick has had a full and varied life. He has worked in the civil service, working in the labour exchange as a clerk where his first monthly wage was 8 pounds 15 shillings and 9 pence. He also worked for the department of agriculture, rearing pigs in Cookstown, and also many years in AI (Artificial Insemination).

18 months before his first wage he participated in sports, playing Gaelic football, and running. He ran and won 3 races, winning 11 pounds and 5 shillings.
