Days Like this

Ruth McIlroy

March 1987.

Ruth McIlroy

"I lost all love and respect for my father that day. I was only 7. That was the last day I saw him."

The Story

Ruth's parents separated when she was 7. Then there were Sunday access visits to her father. She remembers sitting in the garden one day and seeing her mum and dad fighting. Her sister and brother were in tears although Ruth didn't cry. 'I was just shocked', she says. Her mum later told her that her daddy hit her.

My View

When people say the words "I love you", I tend to take stock. "Do you really?" Those words get thrown around in every day language. When I hear them I think, "what do you mean?... Are you saying it to make yourself feel better?"

It takes me a long time to say the words. I have to be sure.

My partner told me the day we met but it took me a year. In a way I am hardened to it. I really guard those words even though I am a loving and emotional person.
