Grainne Casey

Gráinne remembers her Graduation day on 18th June 2004.

Grainne Casey

"I thought 'I have reached a completely different place. This isn't teenage me, this isn't even stupid me anymore.'"

The Story

For Gráinne Casey, her graduation at Aberdeen wasn't just a ceremony. For her, it was a rite of passage and marked a profound change in her sense of who she was and in her relationship with her parents. "To have an adult conversation that wasn't about being their child... and just realising that your parents are people as well as your parents..."

The story continues...

After Gráinne got her degree in Sociology and Women's Studies, she stayed in Aberdeen for a year, working as a youth worker and studying for a postgraduate Diploma at Dundee. She moved to Surrey in England two years ago and is still a youth worker. Although she misses Aberdeen she is enjoying her life in Surrey. She told us that she was delighted and surprised at some of the feedback she had received after the story was broadcast on Days Like This.
