Malachy Mooney
"Sitting in the Great Hall had struck a cord with me...I hadn't done too badly for a wee fella that failed the 11 Plus."
The story...
Malachy never took the opportunities he was given when he was at school. So, at the age of 34, he became a mature student and attended QUB. Six years later he graduated. It was a long road but he got there eventually and met some very interesting people on the way!

Comment: Malachy:Your confidence in chairing the Mary McAleece occasion in QUB has truly laid the long shadow cast by the "11+" to rest. You have deservedly reached the pinacle of education, all be it,by a circuitous route.
I have sat exams in the Great Hall in the early 1960s.
Indeed,I occasionally visit the Quadrangle where I sit and ponder my own educational career and thank the University:a psychological shrine for me.
Good luck and every success;Arthur.
