Nicki Such

January 2000 was my special time.

Nicki Such

"I just started hearing something in the waves. I could hear an African Acapella choir in the waves. "

The Story

Nicki Such's life revolved around her husband's cricket career until she took a boat trip to Robin Island in South Africa. The enchanting music she heard in the sea made her make a decision: Would she stop running her life to someone else's demands or would she take a new step to involve African music in her life?

My View

Nicki is now the head of percussion and world music in the City of Belfast School of music. In addition, she has developed and diversified her work and has started a company called A-Freek-A!, a cross community youth group which is based in inner-city Belfast. It explores varied World Music traditions using authentic instrumentation, and aspires to the highest professionalism in every aspect of its work. Her work includes Team Building Workshops for corporate functions, workshops for beginners to advanced drumming sessions.

Nicki is also involved in cross-community/cross-border workshops aimed at bringing people together and festival workshops - which train participants for performances at festivals etc.

The story continues...

In May 2007, a group of Nikki's students performed in the Lord Mayor's Show in Belfast. See a short video of them here...
