"Hopefully my grandchildren will make that same journey in the years to come..."

The Story

Martin goes to pay his respects to a family member whose presence was always felt yet his name rarely mentioned. It was to be an emotional journey he always knew he would make at some time in his life.

Comment: This is a poignant story. A dedicated republican kneeling at the graveside of his grandfather who must have been a dedicated British loyalist in order to make the supreme sacrifice. Martin Meehan was also dedicated to a cause and prepared to kill for it just like his grandfather. The only difference was the former was defending his freedom and his country and died for it while the latter was opposing that very ideal. Martin could not see the futility of a war fought 90 years ago. I hope he may have come round to thinking this before his untimely death, but alas he did'nt say it. There is no such thing as a just war. We are all losers. May he rest in peace after another bloody war which no one won.
