Joan Lawless

Joan looks back to the early days of the Troubles in 1971.

Joan Lawless

"Over the years with the troubles we really came through some awful days, but the Northern Ireland sense of humour was always there..."

The Story

Joan tells us a story that proves that in times of hardship and conflict the most colourful characters can appear. In a night of rioting in Belfast it was time for 'Frankie Vaughan' to make a cameo appearance...

Comment: A really cracking story! I've listened several times and laughed heartily each time. I could really identify with Joan's story having lived in North Belfast myself during the Troubles. Yet it makes such a serious point - the importance of humour in difficult situations. The old saying is true - if you don't laugh, you'll cry.
