Electric Picnic 2007
M.I.A.

Describe In Three Words: Frantic dayglo acrobatics.

Remarkable Moment: Among a line up of unique, boundary-mashing artistes, her name still stands out. No one makes music quite like she does and no one here puts on as energetic a show. Welcome to planet M.I.A.

The sound isn't great for her set (why is it the simple MC/DJ combo never sounds good at festivals?!) but sheer energy, infinite charisma and some vaguely choreographed dance routines carry her through. 'Galang' and 'Bucky Done Gun' wreck the place, but ironically it's the straightest track she's recorded to date that's the real highlight - a sweet (even though it seems to be about holding up a cornershop) new song called 'Paper Planes.'

On the down side, her set seems to get cut short and we don't get to hear the awesome new single 'Jimmy'.

I guess you can't have it all.

Crowd Reaction: Almost as enthusiastic as the performer, though no doubt irked by that dodgy sound.

EP Rating: 7
