Electric Picnic 2007
The Chemical Brothers

Describe In Three Words: The. Chemical. Brothers.

Remarkable Moment: There is a school of thought that The Chemical Brothers aren’t a good live act, that they could well be checking emails and playing solitaire up there and we wouldn’t even know. People argue that it’s not authentic and they’re basically ripping us off. These people are idiots.

If The Chemical Brothers performed properly live, with drummers, vocalists, bass or whatever… it would sound awful. Especially at a festival. There’s always sound problems with that kind of thing and it usually kills the songs. So instead, Tom, Ed and their crew put all the creative energy and money they can find into re-producing, re-mixing or re-writing their entire back catalogue for live consumption, creating gobsmacking visuals and an awesome light show. What more can they possibly do?

Let's talk you through this set, then. ‘Galvanize’ opens, not long before ‘Do It Again’, a wee blast of ‘Get Yourself High’ (during which a clown like the one in It appears and freaks everyone out) and ‘All Rights Reversed’. ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ eventually leads to ‘Star Guitar’, which is mashed with New Order’s ‘Temptation’. There’s a wee blast of Primal Scream's most blissful moment, ‘Don’t Fight It Feel It’, over ‘It Doesn’t Matter’, before ‘Saturate’ becomes ‘Believe’. That f**king clown is back for ‘Acid Children’ and thankfully they’re still playing the utterly gorgeous ‘Surface To Air’.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Special moment after special moment. Over the years, they’ve got consistently better at this, simply because they’ve more hits to unleash and money to spend on big screens and visuals. In the right frame of mind, surrounded by friends on a mild summer's evening, watching the Chemical Brothers can honestly be the experience of a lifetime. Tonight is one of those experiences.

Crowd Reaction: I think you get the idea by now...

EP Rating: 10. We honestly don’t see how a performance of dance music could be any better. Perfection.
