Here is our pick of the week in North East Scotland and the Northern Isles: Homecoming Scotland 2009 draws to a close with events across the country celebrating St Andrews Day and the finale of Homecoming Year in Scotland. Historic Scotland for free28 - 29 November Across Scotland The good people at Historic Scotland have waived their normal admission charges to Historic Scotland properties for the weekend. Gain free entry to Historic Scotland sites and buildings including Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, Skara Brae and Elgin Cathedral. A special 'text for nearest' service has been set up by Historic Scotland. Text 'WEEKEND' to 84118, and you can find information on your closest free attraction and its opening times. 30 November Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen Join in with the music and dance for St Andrew's Day. Ceilidhs are taking place across the country from village halls to large venues. One of the biggest and best will be happening at the Beach Ballroom. Stovies are on supply to lift the energy levels! 29 - 30 November Inverurie Join in the St Andrew's Day parade through the town on 29 November. The day culminates in the Christmas lights switch-on and a fireworks display. A Homecoming concert takes place on 30 November at the town hall with a special performance of Aberdeenshire's Homecoming tune. 30 November Buckie Library All are welcome to attend a free concert celebrating Homecoming and St Andrew's Day with traditional tunes and Scottish folk music. 28 November Shetland Museum, Lerwick Start an early countdown to Christmas by listening to some festive songs performed by the children of Bells Brae Primary School. 27 November Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall Film archive nights in Orkney in aid of charity show how closely the islands were to the centre of World War II action. A German pilot's training film is amongst the archive films on offer and shows exactly how much knowledge the Germans had of Orkney defences prior to WWII. The film will be translated live on the night.
