Cobblers' future in question?

Northampton Town General Manager Tony Clarke has issued a stark warning about the future of the club.

At an Open Forum at Sixfields (on Thursday, 16th November), Clarke said if Northampton Borough Council didn't get a move on, current Chairman David Cardoza may walk away from the club.

The issue of the Sixfields ground redevelopment has been on-going for many years now. The club say they understand that it may now be June 2008 before the council are ready for a public consultation.

Mr Clarke says if so, the Chairman and his father may see that as unsustainable and leave. The club say they had been told by the council the process would be speeded up.

He says the club feel let down and insulted. He also predicts the club will fold or run at a loss until relegation to the Conference if the Cardozas walk away. They are believed to be putting in £1 million a year to keep the club running.

Mr Clarke offers the comparison of Colchester's situation where, he says, the council have moved heaven and earth for a new stadium. The Sixfields issue is being discussed by the council on 4th December, which Mr Clarke describes as 'crunch time'.
