Most guys take a trip to Adrenaline Alley in Corby to skate or BMX. But an arts project at the park is helping users make music. Sound artist James Steventon and multimedia artist Andy Eathorne have been handing out mini-disc recorders so that sounds around the park can be sampled and layered into musical tracks.  | | The music is put together on computer. |
"We don't know what's going to come out of it," says Andy. "It's a big exploration for all of us". He hopes that the guys using the park will be excited by making music: "I hope the kids will get an interest in the arts and it'll give them an interest other than playing with their Playstation's." James is pleased with the results so far: "We explain how to structure the music and how to make a tune. Some of them took to it really well. They understand where things should happen." The project doesn't stop with music making. Video cameras are also handed out and help is given to make short movies. Andy says that one video, made by eight to 11-year-olds, is a day in their lives in the park: "Rather than just doing the normal stunts and tricks, we've got all the things that go on in the park. And we look at the abstract ways we can use film". Andy adds: "Art doesn't have to be a picture on a wall or whatever. [The young people] would probably never come across things like that. They've never been to a gallery. It's opening up all those options to them." The arts project is run in conjunction with Fermynwoods Art Gallery. It follows a photography project at Adrenalin Alley which resulted in the gallery mounting an exhibition of their work. |
