Silverstone's Great British Heroes

British Formula One racing drivers have helped in creating a great atmosphere when they race at the Silverstone circuit - Find out about some of the past heroes.

Stirling Moss (1954-1961)

The man who made Formula One famous in Britain and arguably the greatest driver never to win a world title. British drivers were not considered much good in a car before Moss rewrote the rule book. Over 40 years after a career-ending shunt, his name is as well known as ever - British Grand Prix wins: Two.

Jim Clark (1960-1968)

Britain's greatest driver. Never had the exuberance of Mansell but had more natural ability than his peers, some would say the most gifted driver ever to sit behind a wheel. Enjoyed phenomenal success in a career cut short by a fatal crash, including three Silverstone wins - British Grand Prix wins: Five.

James Hunt (1973-1979)

A true sporting playboy who struck a chord with British fans with his upper class charm and wild boy lifestyle. He was not bad in a car either. British fans at Brands Hatch threatened a riot in 1976 if he were not allowed to take a restart, such was their devotion - British Grand Prix wins: One.

Nigel Mansell (1980-1995)

The king of home heroes. 'Our Nige' whipped the Silverstone crowd into a never-seen-before frenzy with his aggressive style of racing. He claimed their support gave him an extra second a lap of speed while they would - and frequently did - climb over any obstacle in their way to mob their hero - British Grand Prix wins: Four.

Damon Hill (1992-1998)

British fans felt every blow Hill suffered on the way to his eventual title success of 1996. His clashes with Michael Schumacher, his championship near misses, it all struck a chord with a British public used to supporting the underdog. A real people's champion - British Grand Prix wins: One.
