Thanks to the hard work of the centre manager, Gail Adcock, visitors to the Wayland Hall luncheon club can now see a beautiful tapestry, depicting the lives of all the members who attended the centre in the first year of the new millennium. "When I started work here in 1999, I wanted a project that would mark the millennium and commemorate the people who came to the centre," said Gail. To fund the project, staff and members produced a booklet called Millennium Miscellany, featuring members' memories, recipes and remedies. The whole tapestry, which tells the stories of more than 45 members, took Gail and two of her volunteers, Angela Wynne and Jenny Mikulik, a year to stitch. The squares are made from different coloured linens, and all the decoration is done in cross stitch. Each square is decorated with pictures depicting key points in the life of one of the members. The images chart their lives, from where they were born, through marriage, family and work, right up to retirement and hobbies. Gail has taken the tapestry to several hobbies exhibitions. The highlight was entering a millennium tapestry competition featured in Yours retirement magazine. The Wayland Hall Day Care Centre Tapestry was chosen to be one of only 24 out of 2,000, to be displayed at the magazine's conference in Bournemouth. |
