Summertime safety: On the beach

Check out our beach code to make the most of your trip to the seaside.

Fancy a trip to the coast? Then you're in luck as Norfolk is blessed with some of the best and cleanest beaches in the country.
But if you're planning a retreat to the beach, make sure you treat it with respect.

Here are our top ten tips on seaside safety.

bullet point. Inflatables and dinghies should be tethered to the beach and users should be watched at all times. If you do float out to sea, keep on the inflatable and do not try to swim to safety.

bullet point. Make sure children are supervised at all times.

bullet point. If you’re going to swim, choose a beach with a lifeguard on duty and follow the lifeguard’s advice.

bullet point. Make sure someone knows where you are.

bullet point. Do not swim when the red flag is flying.

bullet point. Do not swim straight after a meal

bullet point. Keep away from boat launching areas.

bullet point. Do not climb or swim close to breakwaters or piers.

bullet point. Do not swim outwards from the beach, but swim parallel to the beach, such as from groin to groin.

bullet point. Do not dig in or climb on the cliffs, and keep clear of sand dunes.

If there is an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
