Here are our top ten tips on seaside safety. Inflatables and dinghies should be tethered to the beach and users should be watched at all times. If you do float out to sea, keep on the inflatable and do not try to swim to safety.
Make sure children are supervised at all times.
If you’re going to swim, choose a beach with a lifeguard on duty and follow the lifeguard’s advice.
Make sure someone knows where you are.
Do not swim when the red flag is flying.
Do not swim straight after a meal
Keep away from boat launching areas.
Do not climb or swim close to breakwaters or piers.
Do not swim outwards from the beach, but swim parallel to the beach, such as from groin to groin.
Do not dig in or climb on the cliffs, and keep clear of sand dunes.
If there is an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
