| Eastwork is the commission of two major projects - which will be launched at the exhibition
Funded by the Regional Arts Lottery Project, Matthew Houlding has been commissioned to make one; a major outdoor sculpture
Fabricated in steel and aluminium, with a golden interior, the piece is called The Long Journey Home, Sapphire Ex15
The work is expected to be sited amongst the trees and near the lake at the University of East Anglia but visible from the Sainsbury Centre
The sculpture will be launched on 5 July and should be accessible to the public every day between 5 July and 31 October

| | One of Englands biggest annual exhibitions of contemporary art is being held in Norwich, showing work by artists from all over the world.
Every summer, the Norwich Gallery expands into the bright and spacious Victorian studios of the Norwich School of Art and Design.
As soon as the students move out after their degree shows, the organisers move in to prepare for the exhibition.

Curator Lynda Morris said:
EAST has encouraged Norwich to develop an enthusiasm for contemporary art.
"We work with two selectors each year, who choose the 30 artists from around 1200 applications from 39 countries.
"One artist receives the prestigious EAST award of £5,000 to help them develop their work, " said Morris.
This year, the selectors, Toby Webster and the artist Eva Rothschild have put together an exhibition that is in touch with the most contemporary practice in Scotland, England, Europe and the USA.
The emphasis is on the handmade and the exhibition looks at ideas of design and construction, colour, pattern and popular culture.
There will be an exciting and diverse range of work in painting, sculpture and video including work from the following artists.

Kate Davis was born in New Zealand in 1977 and studied for a Foundation degree in Norwich before spending four years at Glasgow School of Art.
Her detailed and meticulous pencil drawings overlap portraits with abstract patterns and animal parts, pushing each image towards what is perhaps ugly or inappropriate.

Toby Zeigler bases his work on computer generated patterns which he turns into paintings, three dimensional objects or even an entire room, covered with this seemingly mechanical patterning.
But rather than a digital print, these are laboriously hand painted.
Toby aims to overcome our immunity to large images by constructing something so painstakingly on such a grand, imposing scale. Colin Lowe and Roddy Thomson work together and with other artists such as Sarah Lucas.
For EAST they will make a new work which will transform the Norwich gallery into a traditional English pub, filled with artworks.
They were fascinated to hear the local legend that Norwich has a pub for every day of the year!

Caroline de Lannoy, originally from Belgium, makes exquisite, optical paintings, some no bigger than two square inches.
Caroline says: I am concerned with the concept of colour colour as enhancer and modifier of space
colour as transmission of light
colour as generator of mood.
The exhibition is funded by Arts Council of England East, Norwich School of Art and Design, Henry Moore Foundation, Regional Arts Lottery Programme, Norwich City Council, Norfolk County Council.
