The stars arrived in suitable style at Bressingham in a classic double-decker bus before being introduced to the large and excited audience. Most of the actors remarked on how amazed they were at the continued popularity of these wonderful comedy programmes. For many of the fans, the biggest surprise was the appearance of Clive Dunn, who now lives with his family in Portugal. Dunn played Corporal Jones in Dad’s Army and seemed genuinely pleased to be back with some of his old colleagues and fans, saying how lovely it was to be in Norfolk after all these years. | | Director Harold Snoad (left) with actors |
The stars spent the day signing autographs at various places around the museum. I, like many others was keen to get several pictures and books signed by the Dad’s Army writers and cast. Question timeDespite the queues, the actors each took time to answer my questions - and no doubt there were many others asking the same things! The queues were long, but once you met the special guests, it was worth every minute. I had my picture taken with Donald Hewlett, who starred in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and You Rang M’Lord, and also caught up with Ian Lavender, Pike in Dad’s Army. Several Dad’s Army vehicles were parked in Bressingam's gardens, with Jones' butcher van a big attraction. Perhaps the biggest highlight though was when Clive Dunn took another look around, much to the joy of the many photographers. When the day came to an end, I was so pleased to have met many of the stars who I'd watched while growing up. All in all, it was a very well attended event - again put together by the Dad's Army Appreciation Society, whose president is Bill 'put that light out' Pertwee.
