Norfolk's Craig Coates has made it to the final week of the Big Brother gameshow. While a nation is glued to the television watching Craig and Anthony bicker, we talk to his Dad about his time in the house.

Norfolk lad Craig Coates has kept the nation glued to the telly with his antics on the reality television show, Big Brother - not to mention his arguments with fellow housemate Anthony Hutton.

Craig, who is 20 years old and a hairdresser from Cromer, has made it to the final week of the programme.

Despite coming so far, he has been dubbed 'the camp crimper' by the media and his relationship with Anthony has been criticised. His family have also been at the receiving end of malicious phone calls.

"Now he's in the final week I think he's got every chance so I'm going to be really positive and say 'Yeah, go on son, you can win it for Norfolk!'"

BBC Radio Norfolk's Paul Moseley spoke to Craig's dad, John Coates about how he thought Craig had been coping under the watchful eye of a nation and how the media have responded to him being in the house.

So how has it been these last few weeks?

Up and down I think. The things in the newspapers and one or two things on the show haven't been very nice to watch.

My family think he's gone through a lot of emotions in the last two weeks. He's got very upset, very angry and I think he deserves to be there – what's he's been through and what's he put up with, he deserves to where he is now.

For you what's been the hardest thing being on the outside having to watch Craig?

Just to understand what he's going through. He's on a show – you can't really contemplate what he's really feeling – only he knows that.

When you're down you're upset, you can turn to someone, your brother, your sister, your mum, your dad or your friend. Craig has no-one in there. They say they have the diary room but it's no consolation speaking to a microphone is it?

Not really, but I suppose he does have Anthony there.

Well with respect, I think Anthony just doesn't understand what Craig is going through.

The other night, Craig was saying "You just don't understand how I'm feeling," and Anthony will say something and Craig will say, "Why are you saying that?" and Anthony will say, "I don't understand, man" and I don't think even Anthony will understand what he's going through.

I think Max understood more than Anthony has. I know that Craig's spent more time with Anthony but I think he understood Craig more and understood his feelings.

Craig said that Maxwell could lift him within minutes and I don't want to sound nasty but Anythony is so in much love with himself I think that he likes Craig as a friend but I think if the tough really got going I don't think he'd be there for Craig.

How's it been for you dealing with the press? Some of the stuff in the papers – it really is quite shocking.

Unfortunately there's an old saying that money is the root of all evil. They've come down and they're offering loads of money for stories and when you're throwing thousands of pounds at people, they're going to take it. But it's news today and fish and chip paper tomorrow.

What have you made of the way that Craig’s been portrayed in the show by the producers?

I don't know. I think some of it is his own doing. Some of the things he's done especially when he's had a drink or two, he's let himself down a little bit.

But on the other hand I feel as though Craig has been one of the most entertaining housemates on there.

I know that Lisa Tarbuck said on the show, "Craig has been my favourite." He’s given her the most laughs and I think that's a genuine opinion of a lot of people and I think that Craig does make you laugh.

How does it make you feel when you see your son talking about what his life is like and getting so emotional about it?

Craig kept a lot of things to himself. He would never discuss his personal life with me or his mother – he kept a lot of things close to his chest.

He's kept a lot of his emotions and feelings back and I think that now being on Big Brother I think all of those emotions and feelings are coming out.

I think unfortunately, when you're discovering your feelings and discovering your emotions I don't think Big Brother is the place to be – specially with all the press, the camera and the media – they look for any kind of chink in your armour. As soon as you get upset and emotion, they're there to pick up on it.

Has the whole bunny boiler thing has been quite hard on you?

They're always looking for an angle, for a story, especially these last two weeks. If you took Craig and Anthony out of the equation I don't think you'd ever watch the show.

They're the main pair in it now.

Every day there is a newspaper, an edited show in the evening and people obviously picking up on what they're doing. They've been headlining the show the way they've acted and what they're doing. The rest of the housemates have had to take a back seat.

How difficult has it been to deal with the phone calls you've been getting?

For years we've watched the show – as a family we're Big Brother fans. We've always had our opinions on other housemates but our opinions have always stayed in our homes.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, everyone's entitled to say something but then you get some people who go over the top and unfortunately they lead sad lonely lives.

I'll argue with my friends about the show sometimes but I'd never contemplate phoning someone’s family up to give them abuse – it's just mad.

Yeah, but that's the society we're living in. There are a lot of sick people. But on a positive note, the amount of fan mail we've had has been unbelievable for Craig.

The amount of support and we're talking married women with husbands, families and children and they're sympathetic and they're supporting Craig.

You're always going to get the negatives but there also been a lot of positives and I think that the positive has shown by not being nominated every week by the housemates.

I think the intro video about how he likes to destroy lives probably wasn't the best start but as he's gone on I think people perceive him as a sympathetic character to some extent.

When you apply for a show like Big Brother there's 150,000 people applying and you get a minute – and you've got to come up with something that's going to make them stand up say "Yes, he can be a possible candidate".

I think that's what Craig did. He wanted to get on the show, he wanted a shock video. He's cooked for the housemates and he's entertained all the housemates. So whatever was on the video people have seen Craig for what he is.

Another thing I like is that he likes to talk about Norfolk a lot – the Cromer carnival, Liquid in Norwich – it shows he loves it round here.

Craig's like me. He loves his home. I always say to him there's no place like home. Craig he does love Cromer – he loves the beach, he’s a country boy at heart.

Can he win?

I'm going to be positive and say yes he can win. I'm gonna say that I've been a little bit negative at times, I didn't think he could win and now he's in the final week I think he's got every chance so I'm going to be really positive and say "Yeah, go on son, you can win for Norfolk."

However, no amount of rose-tinted glasses can disguise the fact that if a man had treated a woman so obsessively & manipulatively & against their will as Craig has treated Anthony, stronger complaints would have been made & he may even have been removed from the house. Good Luck Craig - you've been one of the most entertaining people in there, and while the others are too aware of what makes them look good, you've not been afraid to be really yourself, which is the hardest thing to do. We've all been there with crushes on people who don't reciprocate, but most of us are lucky enough not to be locked up with the person 24/7 - I think you've dealt with it really well, and been an inspiration to a lot of people. Most of all, you seem like you'd be a loyal friend and a really good laugh - which is rare in a BB contestant!

craig is a wonderful boy,has a good heart and deep feelings,anthony has has used craig to stay in the bb house, without craig anthony would have been evicted weeks ago as a very dull h'mate, no doubting he has craig to thank for keeping him there, but craig is the starof the show.

Craig Coates is a disgrace to gay people, and residents of Norfolk. He needs to step back and take a good hard look at the way he has been behaving and try to change into a more likeable person.
