Have you been to Norfolk before? I haven't been to Norwich for so long and I haven't been to Carrow Road, I hope I'll be forgiven for that. Have you spoken to Delia? I'm going to see her later and I've often said that I must come up and see a game but, of course, you never do. So here you are supporting Sir Elton, how big a gig is this? It's fabulous isn't it. He is the greatest. I adore and love him for his talent, his generosity and I love him because he's like a brother to me but I've never toured with him. I've sung with him, I've duetted, I've done records with him but I've never toured with him. At this time he's an executive producer on an album I've just finished. Last summer I was on holiday with him and I was sitting round the lunch table with Lucine Grainger of Universal and they decided I should do an album of soul and R 'n' B classic hits that I loved and that's what I've just done. I'm on tour with Elton John, I've just done an album, it's coming out. How great is it to be me? If you're on holiday with Elton John, what does he do? That's none of your business! He rests, he doesn't do gigs. Elton's like me, he doesn't sit in the sun. When you were starting your career did you ever believe you'd still be gigging now? That's an important point and I just have to say thank you God, thank you God, thank you God. I have a lot of gratitude because I'm doing a job that I love. I've been doing it for more than 40 years and now I'm here at Carrow Road with Elton John and there's 21,000 people out there. I've got a new album coming out. It's called Put A Little Soul In Your Heart and I'll be doing a song from it tonight called Put A Little Love In Your Heart and I'll also do, of course, Shout. What's it like working with Elton? He's the best and of course I've seen the show. I go out, I love doing my bit and then I say 'Ok, now I'm going off because I want to come down with you and watch Elton.' Is it better than working with David Bowie? I think there's no comparison. Working with Bowie was amazing - it was a fantastic appearance. This is a fantastic experience in a different way. And maybe now I also see how there's nobody like Elton. Nobody has as many songs, maybe the Bee Gees, Elton and The Beatles. There are not many people who have such a catalogue. Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? I warm up my voice for an hour before I go on. Have you done that yet? I've done half an hour so will you get out of here and let me get on with it! Can you describe what you're going to wear for us. Do you do lots of costume changes? I do not. I don't want go dressing up like a peacock. I don't want it to be about the clothes, I want it to be about the music. At the same time can I tell you how much effort goes into making it look like I've not made an effort! It's basically jeans and unusual tops, but very low-key, as long as I look great! |
