New era for superclub

The time is up for Norwich's first superclub. Time on the Riverside is being split into two venues which will be christened Lava and Ignite when the clubs open their doors this weekend after a £1.5m redevelopment.

Norwich's first superclub is being divided into two venues in a £1.5m revamp which will create around 40 jobs.

Time was one of the first venues to open in the redeveloped Riverside district in 1999 and it has attracted a string of big name DJs. But its owner Luminar Leisure has called time on the 1680-capacity venue and it is entering a new era.

Different ages

The nightspot is being carved up into two clubs which will be christened Lava and Ignite in a bid to appeal to different age groups.

The changes will be revealed on 2 July and they are expected to create between 40 and 50 new jobs, in addition to the staff already employed at Time.

Lava will be aimed at clubbers aged over 25, who the Luton-based entertainment group believes are being under-served on the city's clubbing scene, while Ignite with its industrial style decor is designed to tempt the over 18s through its doors.

Moving stage

The venues are being fitted out with visual projections, plasma screens and state-of-the-art lighting, but the centrepiece will be a hydraulic stage which will descend from Ignite's ceiling during live performances. A VIP room will also be situated between both clubs for special guests.

Sets from some of the country's leading DJs are being lined up at the clubs this summer.

Luminar Leisure spokeswoman Claire de Silva said the revamp is expected to "stun people."

"Lava and Ignite will bring clubbing for Norwich into this century and probably the next," she said.

"One half of the venue will be for the over 25s to set us apart from other clubs and there is a gap in the market for this age group in Norfolk," she added.

More competition

She denied that the revamp has been forced by increased competition from other clubs opening in the city.

"It is not a case of competing," she said. "Luminar has launched a new strategy of updating and rebranding some of its clubs."

The double venue will be the fifth Lava and Ignite to be opened in the UK and the first in eastern England following on from Burnley, Chesterfield, Edinburgh and Middlesbrough.

Couldn't give a damn about the place apart from the fact there are too many noisy nightclubs in the area. My days of clubbing are long over!

check places like oceana out? do u really think lava or ignite has anything on them? superclubs rule the waves!!

Tallaugh
No way. People haven't stop wearing old school trainers or when that little black number comes out. There should me more clubs over 25.

Pink Panther
Garish carpet reminds me of the Eighties. VIP Lounge is an interesting feature - it's like a human fish bowl.

It will be interesting to see how the residents of riverside react after the recent Ferry Boat incident. Superclubs are noisier and, as anyone who's walked down riverside on a Friday night can verify, their patrons are more likely to start fights and cause anti-social behaviour, hence the security guards patrolling and the amount of bouncers. Norwich already has too many nightclubs and people in the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights, why do we need YET another one tying up valuble police time?

Anon
From experience of another over 25 establishment, I can only commend them. A night out is so much more enjoyable when you are not tripping over drunk 16 yr olds.

I couldn't care less about how the place looks inside or out, they need to sort out the music!

Respectable over 25's will never ever ever go to the Riverside Complex. It will be a party palace for barstaff, doorstaff, hairdressers and Norwich promoters!!! ha ha ha ha

neil milligan
It needs a revamp and they also need better bouners who can tell the difference between over 18's and under 18's!!!
