Norwich's first superclub is being divided into two venues in a £1.5m revamp which will create around 40 jobs. Time was one of the first venues to open in the redeveloped Riverside district in 1999 and it has attracted a string of big name DJs. But its owner Luminar Leisure has called time on the 1680-capacity venue and it is entering a new era. Different ages The nightspot is being carved up into two clubs which will be christened Lava and Ignite in a bid to appeal to different age groups. The changes will be revealed on 2 July and they are expected to create between 40 and 50 new jobs, in addition to the staff already employed at Time. Lava will be aimed at clubbers aged over 25, who the Luton-based entertainment group believes are being under-served on the city's clubbing scene, while Ignite with its industrial style decor is designed to tempt the over 18s through its doors. Moving stage The venues are being fitted out with visual projections, plasma screens and state-of-the-art lighting, but the centrepiece will be a hydraulic stage which will descend from Ignite's ceiling during live performances. A VIP room will also be situated between both clubs for special guests. Sets from some of the country's leading DJs are being lined up at the clubs this summer. Luminar Leisure spokeswoman Claire de Silva said the revamp is expected to "stun people." "Lava and Ignite will bring clubbing for Norwich into this century and probably the next," she said. "One half of the venue will be for the over 25s to set us apart from other clubs and there is a gap in the market for this age group in Norfolk," she added. More competition She denied that the revamp has been forced by increased competition from other clubs opening in the city. "It is not a case of competing," she said. "Luminar has launched a new strategy of updating and rebranding some of its clubs." The double venue will be the fifth Lava and Ignite to be opened in the UK and the first in eastern England following on from Burnley, Chesterfield, Edinburgh and Middlesbrough. |
