A strange blue glow has been seen in the night sky in Lincolnshire

For weeks, a strange blue glow has been lighting up the night sky in Lincolnshire, leaving people wondering if it was the Northern Lights or even a UFO.

But now the mystery has finally been solved.

It's actually coming from the "Flying Banana" a very special train that zooms around at night.

Confused? Read on to find out more.

What is the Flying Banana?

The "Flying Banana" works to keep tracks in good condition

No, the "Flying Banana" has nothing to do with the Minions either.

It's actually a bright yellow train that travels around at night, sometimes at 125mph, checking the tracks to make sure the railways are safe.

So why is a yellow train giving off blue glow?

Network Rail - the company that looks after most of Britain's railways - has revealed that the mysterious blue light is due to the "Flying Banana" having some clever gadgets onboard, including lasers that scan the tracks and a high-resolution video camera.

These are used to spot any problems with the tracks, so that engineers can fix them before they cause any danger or disruption.

Sometimes, when the train is testing the power lines above the tracks, its equipment shines a blue light into the sky, which is what people across Lincolnshire have been seeing, especially on hazy nights.

A spokesperson from Network Rail said: "It's not flying saucers. Just our Flying Banana helping to keep trains running reliably."

The Flying Scotsman

The company explained that the "Flying Banana" saves them millions of pounds and helps to keep the railways running smoothly for everybody else.

So how did it get its funny nickname?

Well, it could be a fun twist on the Flying Scotsman, which is thought to be the most famous steam locomotive in the world.

But instead of being green and powered by steam, the "Flying Banana" is bright yellow, like a... you guessed it, a banana.
