Bypass blasting suspended

Rock blasting on the Newry bypass project has been suspended amid safety concerns.

The thousands of motorists who use the A1 route will know all about the roadworks that have caused delays while contractors remove huge chunks of rock in order to upgrade the bypass.

Now though, the blasting has been put on hold because of an incident there last Wednesday when rock landed outside the safety zone and close to people's homes.

According to one local representative the rock actually hit a council worker's car.

As our reporter in the area Francis Gorman's been finding out, there is now an investigation into what went wrong.
