Robert Hamill Inquiry

Public hearings in the inquiry into the 1997 murder of the Portadown man have begun.

His family claim police officers stood by as he was beaten and kicked by loyalists and that the initial investigation was second class because he was a Catholic.

It's also claimed that that a police officer helped protect the identity of one of the killers.

The inquiry panel hope to produce their findings by June next year, at an estimated cost of £36,000,000.

Our Home Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney's report contains some flash photography.
