The organisers of a music event which saw a Kanye West performance end after 13 minutes when his mic failed say the star's own team may have been to blame.

A spokeswoman said Kanye's people were "in full control of the lights and sound throughout his set" at the Pan Am Games closing ceremony in Toronto.

Spokeswoman Heather Irwin added: "We understand that they turned up the volume to a point where the sound system could no longer keep up.

"But that might have been all part of the plan. He is known for his creative performances."

It left the nearly 40,000 people at the Pan Am Games closing ceremony a little confused.

It had all started so well.

Kanye was the final artist in a two-hour ceremony to mark the end of the Pan Am Games, a sporting event in which Canada's athletes had won a record 217 medals.

He was one of several acts to appear. The crowd had already seen and performances by Pitbull and Serena Ryder.

And then Kanye West burst onto the stage - beginning his set with Stronger.

There were no effects, no backing dancers, no set - just Kanye and a backing tape.

He seemed to be having a good time, calling for the stadium lights to be turned on, jumping around the stage and getting the crowd to clap.

So far so good.

And then his mic appears to have cut out, and video footage shows him throwing it into the air and storming off, leaving a confused crowd to enjoy the fireworks that ended the evening.

Someone in the crowd tweeted: Ummm the sound skipped out and then Kanye actually threw the mic very far in the air and now he is gone and we're not sure what to think., external

Organisers later tweeted that Kanye's mic failure had been due to "technical error", but also tweeted their thanks to people for coming to the event.

They tweeted: #Toronto: Thank you for making noise heard right across the Americas and the Caribbean. #TO2015 #ClosingCeremony , external

No reference - at that stage - to their headliner who had difficulty making himself heard.

We prefer this theory though:
