Deal to protect Amazon in Ecuador from oil drilling

Ecuador has agreed to refrain from drilling for oil in a pristine Amazon rainforest reserve if rich countries provide $3.6 billion in return.

Under a pioneering agreement signed with the United Nations, Ecuador will receive about half of what the country would have earned if it had gone ahead with oil production.
