In pictures: Europe enjoys partial eclipse
Europeans have witnessed the first partial solar eclipse of 2011. Viewers like this man in Germany's financial capital, Frankfurt, used protective lenses to see the spectacular sunrise.
The sun appeared like a sickle in this photograph taken in Dinslaken, north-western Germany.
This blaze of colour was photographed from Guadalmar beach in Malaga, Spain.
An employee at the Stefanik Observatory in Prague used a projection shield to capture the eclipse.
In the Polish capital Warsaw, this shot of the eclipse through a Coca Cola sign gave the event a theatrical feel.
Many photographers took pictures of the eclipse juxtaposed with the silhouettes of monuments such as this statue on the roof of the national theatre in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Here the eclipse is seen behind one of the famous stars on the Kremlin in Moscow.
It was a special day for Europe's sky-watchers. They will have to wait until 20 March 2015 to see anything like this eclipse of the Sun by the Moon again.
