Somalia marks independence day on Friday with some residents of the capital, Mogadishu, dressing up in national colours to celebrate outside the ruins of the country's former parliament.

The following day the work of some of the continent's top designers is shown off at the African Fashion Week in Lagos, Nigeria.

Kenyan protesters use some vivid props to make their point at a demonstration in the capital, Nairobi, against what they described as extrajudicial killings by the police. Four policemen have been detained in connection with the murders of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client and their driver.

On Thursday a Zimbabwean protester is photographed in the country's second city, Bulawayo, as some people clashed with police after two activists were detained.

Some people in Liberia on Friday try to see the funny side of the only road leading to the airport being cut off by flooding. Travellers are forced to use a canoe to catch their flights.

In Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, men dance and sing to the mark the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

In Kano, northern Nigeria, the Durbar, or race to reach the Emir's palace, is part of the Eid festivities.
