Oceans of Fantasy showcases work of artist Pete Fowler

A new exhibition by Cardiff-born artist Pete Fowler, famous for his collaborations with Super Furry Animals, has opened at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre

The exhibition shows both unseen drawings, videos and sculptures by the artist, known for his colourful creations of "otherworldly creatures in imagined places", as well as archive material from his career

Fowler designed the sleeve of Super Furry Animals' single Hermann Loves Pauline in 1997, and has gone on to illustrate many of the band's subsequent albums

Fowler has also gained an international following through his World of Monsterism, and some of the toys that he has designed are on show

He has created a large mural especially for the exhibition, which draws on the "cosmic nautical" themes in his work and his connection to music

Fowler said: "My studio is like an Aladdin’s cave of sketches and original artwork for the projects I’ve done with the Super Furries, so there will probably be some things that fans won’t have seen before"

"I can’t wait to show newer work too, including the landscape paintings I’ve been working on in Cornwall. I’m not known for landscape painting, so I am pleased to be able to show those pieces and maybe alter perceptions."

Some of his paintings include cartoon-like portraits of people in the music business, including Chariots of Fire composer Vangelis and music producer Joe Meek. Here is a work entitled Vangelis In Space

One of the sculptures on show includes this piece, titled Van AudiOrlax. At three feet tall, it is the largest custom-built figure Fowler has ever produced and is fitted with an in-built synthesiser
