In Pictures: London 2012 Olympic festival in Ebbw Vale
A "ghost parade" through Ebbw Vale has marked the arrival of a converted aeroplane to mark Wales' contribution to the 12-week London 2012 festival. The work of visual artist Stefhan Caddick, the parade marks the arrival of Marc Rees' Adain Avion, a DC-9, which is being towed into towns and used as a mobile art space, social sculpture and travelling time capsule. Part carnival and part protest, the ghost parade marks the 10th anniversary of the closure of the town's steel works.
The plane's arrival, heralded by local air cadets, was also designed to mark 10 years since the closure of the town's steel works. The ghost parade was designed to celebrate "a decade of transition in Ebbw Vale".
Described as "part carnival, part surreal protest," the ghost parade participants were asked to carry "phantom" placards and banners.
Intended as a "nocturnal" parade, the two-hour procession started at 21:00 BST.
The Ebbw Valley Brass band provided a musical accompaniment.
The parade converged on screens which showed archive film clips.
When the parade reaches its destination the placards were roughly configured to form a large "central screen", flanked by two existing screens.
The three "screens" were then used to show a short film. Ghost Parade was the work of visual artist Stefhan Caddick as part of Marc Rees' Adain Avion.
A series of events is planned in Ebbw Vale this week, including a performance by Ballet Cymru, story-telling sessions and a show by the Citrus Arts and Valleys Gymnastics Academy. The plane has already visited Swansea and will travel to Llandudno. The exhibition will end at the National Eisteddfod in August.
