In pictures: Edinburgh Zoo panda Yang Guang prepares for mating
Edinburgh Zoo's male panda Yang Guang is gearing up for the mating season.
Yang Guang arrived in Edinburgh in December 2011 along with his female companion Tian Tian.
On Sunday, Edinburgh Zoo announced Yang Guang was performing "handstands" while scent-marking his enclosure. This would be a demonstration of virility in the wild.
Female pandas are only in season for breeding 72 hours a year, in the spring. Last year zoo keepers said there were encouraging signs between the two, but they failed to mate.
Yang Guang currently weights 118kg. His maximum weight last year during the breeding season was 132kg. Tian Tian’s weight remains constant at 103kg.
The nine-year old giant panda is now eating 50kg of bamboo per day to bulk up for mating.
Yang Guang normally eats 35kg of bamboo per day, but this will rise to close to 100kg at the peak of the breeding season.
