On the fourth day of her trip to celebrate 60 years on the throne, the Queen saw her grandson Prince William installed into the historic Order of the Thistle at a ceremony in Edinburgh.

Members of the public look on in the hope of getting a glimpse of the royal family attending the thistle ceremony at St Giles Cathedral in Scotland's capital.

The grand robes of the ancient order were worn by Princess Anne, her father the Duke of Edinburgh, heir to the throne Prince William and her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II.

Prince William's wife Kate was at his side as the royal family continued their celebrations in Scotland to mark the Queens 60 years on the throne.

On Wednesday, 1,300 dignitaries were with the Queen at a Diamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving at Glasgow Cathedral.

Queen meets well wishers in George Square, Glasgow

Well wishers gathered in their hundreds at George Square in Glasgow to greet the monarch. She met members of the public after the cathedral service.

A soggy Scotland greeted Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, when she began her Diamond Jubilee celebrations north of the border on Monday. With rain jacket and umbrella in hand, she inspected the soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland, during the traditional Ceremony Of The Keys in Edinburgh.

In from the rain, the Queen visited the newly-refurbished National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. The monarch toured the venue, which is home to a collection of world-renowned paintings.

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, with her daughter Rosie, after she was awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to charity and armed forces at a ceremony at The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

After giving out honours to Scots named in the New Year Honours List, the Queen attended a garden party in the grounds of Holyroodhouse.

More than 8,000 guests attended the afternoon event with the Queen shaking hands and chatting to many of them.

The Duke of Edinburgh, now recovered from an illness which meant he missed some jubilee engagements in London, also attended the royal garden party.
