War Horse: Photos from filming in Castle Combe
Steven Spielberg's latest movie, the World War I drama War Horse, is released on Friday. A week's filming took place in the picturesque Wiltshire village of Castle Combe in late 2010. Resident Anna Roberts took photos as filming progressed right on her doorstep at the Old Rectory Tea Room.
Mrs Roberts said the filming was one of the most exciting weeks of her life. "The whole thing was an incredible experience. We watched the village being dressed up and transformed over a period of a week. We were then able to have a first class view of the filming from morning to night the following week."
The above photo shows Mrs Roberts' two daughters Eliza and Lola and their two friends Nathan and Michelyn posing with extras dressed as soldiers. Mrs Roberts said: "The actors all looked incredible in their costumes."
Due to its unspoilt and timeless quality, Castle Combe has appeared in many film and television productions over the years, including the 1960s musical Doctor Dolittle starring Rex Harrison and the recent fantasy movie Stardust.
War Horse, a children's novel, was first published in 1982. It tells the story of a young man who enlists to service in World War I after his beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry. It was turned into a successful musical in 2007.
Mrs Roberts said she felt "deflated" when filming was over. She said she wished the production team could have left the village looking as it was. "It was a wonderfully exciting week and an incredible experience to have been part of."
