A man has been arrested after a suspicious device was found in a block of flats in West Sussex.

A bomb disposal team has been called to the Belmont Close area of Hassocks to make it safe.

The Middlewick House flats and surrounding area have been evacuated and a cordon is in place.

The man, 50, is being held on suspicion of making an explosive substance. Sussex Police said the incident was not terror-related.

Det Supt Carwyn Hughes said: "We are advising residents to avoid the area for the time being.

"I want to reassure those in the area and wider community that we are treating this as an isolated incident and [it] is not terrorist related."
