Enthusiasts have re-enacted the Battle of Hastings at the site of the most famous date in English history

The occasion, which mimicked the events of 14 October 1066, took place at Battle Abbey in East Sussex on Saturday and Sunday

More than 400 soldiers clashed in the re-enactment, which saw the Saxon army, led by King Harold of England, deployed on Senlac Ridge, overlooking the battlefield

They faced a Norman force of infantry, archers and cavalry, as depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry

The tapestry shows King Harold, centre, taking an arrow in the eye before being ridden down by a Norman cavalryman

William the Conqueror, centre, is seen attacking the Saxons on horseback in the battle, which saw King Harold defeated
